Curriculum
Our department offers two programs: the Bachelor program and the Master program. The undergraduate program is dedicated to cultivating students’ ability in being English educators of elementary schools or entering English related professions, while the Master program is devoted to preparing students for academic research of English teaching and related disciplines.

The undergraduate program develops students’ English ability of communication and cultivates the professional knowledge of English instruction including teaching methodology, curriculum design, and practical training, etc. There are four dimensions in the curriculum for the undergraduate: 1) basic competency in English, 2) English instruction, 3) linguistics, 4) literature and translation. English skill classes adopt small-class teaching so that students’ individual differences and learning effects can be taken care of. In addition, our department has constant partnership with the Affiliated Elementary School of University of Taipei as well as other elementary schools in Taipei city which grant students abundant opportunities for internship.

The curriculum for the Master program highlights the study of several areas: English teaching and language learning processes, children’s language acquisition, study and translation of children’s literature, and bilingual education. To cultivate students’ research ability, we offer courses on theories of language development, current issues of English teaching, the difficulties of learning foreign languages, teaching strategies and methods, research methodologies, etc. More than the theories of English teaching and the training on research methodology, the affiliated elementary school of our university and the partner elementary schools provide great opportunities for students to conduct research on English teaching and children’s language learning by means of classroom observation.

The faculty of our department has 11 full-time faculty members (3 professors, 5 associate professors, 1 assistant professor and 2 lecturers). The two lecturers are native speakers of English who are employed to teach English skill classes and provide language-learning consultation.

Our department is located at the 6th floor of Qin-pu building, University of Taipei. We have well-equipped classrooms which is meant for multi-media learning, as well as a self-study classroom, a reading room, and two seminar rooms for reading, discussing and researching purposes.
