Hi! I am Jhoanna Jane C. Layos, a proud Filipina currently pursuing a master's degree in Biomedical Science at NSYSU. Ever since I got accepted to this university, I have been asked tons of questions, like "Why did you choose to study in Taiwan?" as the most frequently asked one. I perceived Taiwan as a progressive country with a rich culture. I find it interesting to study in a place where traditions and progress co-exist. I have always known that Taiwan has a strong research community and advanced research technology, especially in my chosen field. After a year of living in Taiwan, my thought remains unchanged. I also find the local food and snacks in Taiwan delicious, such as bubble milk tea, hotpots, and QQ eggs, a personal favorite.
My undergraduate major was more focused on general biology and fieldwork. So, I applied for two departments at NSYSU: Biological Sciences and Biomedical Sciences. I could say that I am well versed in fieldwork compared to laboratory experiments (molecular and cell biology). When the results were out, I got accepted to both but opted to choose Biomedical Sciences. Since I was a kid, I was always fascinated by science. I dreamed of becoming a doctor, but this changed when I went to college; then, I decided to pursue my master's in biomedical science. So far, my research and studies here are quite challenging, but I enjoy every moment of it.
Pursuing my master's degree in a foreign country felt terrifying but liberating at the same time. It's a humbling experience. I met some difficulties at first, but it got better every day. I got to meet new people from different cultures and backgrounds. I can say that I have developed new skills that will be useful for my future endeavors. One of the best things that I like about my life here is the feeling of freedom. I adore how I can do many things that I have never done before, exploring a whole new culture and living in a new environment. There are so much potential, beauty, and possibilities lying around the corners as I traverse the city. In research, I appreciate the freedom I get when I formulate ideas. I can do what I want with what I hope to achieve, and I also have the support of my very hands-on adviser. This part of my life is definitely one for the books, and I am glad that I made these memories in Taiwan. It is way out of my comfort zone, and it feels daunting, but I am learning and growing every day, and it's a beautiful experience.
